“Sitting in the backyard with aboriginal artist Bruce Wiggan in One Arm Point I noticed this eagle perched on a tree branch a few feet from us. Bruce told me he was ‘ a friend’ and he stayed perfectly still while I photographed him, about 2 feet from him at my closest and he studied the lens harder than any other subject ever has” – RUSSELL JAMES

The Kimberley Ranges are remote regions of Western Australia and sit at the core of James’ creative inspiration. The magnificent landscapes, the secrets of ancient culture, and the extreme weather that transforms the region each year profoundly influenced James during his teenage years.Consequently, he has returned time and again to photograph the area throughout his life. The resulting series, Belong, is named in recognition of his own sense of connection to this homeland. His photographs in the series span culture, tradition, and breathtaking landscapes.
In 2020, James collaborated with model Bella Geminder to create images that highlight the natural beauty of this remarkable part of our world.
“The photographs I have taken there are a reminder of our beautiful planet and our fragile human connection to it.” – RUSSELL JAMES
